Martin Luther King Jr.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. was the voice of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • As a young boy, he learned from his father’s ability to confront racism with dignity and self-control.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. was ordained a minister at the age of 18 and graduated from Morehouse College at 19.
  • He led the historic bus boycott in response to Rosa Parks being asked to give up her seat to a white person.
  • In August of 1963, overlooking the National Mall in D.C., King gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

1. Besides getting suspended from school, what are some of the other possible outcomes and consequences of fighting? With the consequences so severe for fighting, why do students continue to fight in school?
2. Discuss an occasion when you lost your temper and acted on your emotions. What was the result? How would you handle that situation differently now that you are more mature?
3. We all have a breaking point where we lose control of our emotions. When this happens, we normally do things we later regret because we don’t clearly think through all of our options. There will be times in your life when you will need to think your way through difficult situations. What steps can you take to better prepare yourself for those situations?
